My old sleep pattern is back since there was no sedative alteration yesterday. I wake up at five and lie there for an hour, fighting the urge to sit on the windowsill. Once I can’t stand it anymore, I get out of bed and get dressed. The Coffee Shop is already open for the day. I don’t dawdle but head downstairs to start breakfast. It’s pancakes this morning. They take more time than muffins, so they’ll keep me occupied. I barrel through the morning, picking tasks that take time, keeping my brain distracted. I’m trying to wait until mid-afternoon to check out. I’m not as concerned about going to the shop today as I am with hanging out with Jackson, and that may not happen until the shop closes. Tomorrow I have an appointment with Booth that will take up a whole chunk of my morning.

At two thirty, I’m in the security office, practically running in place with pent-up energy.

“Hey, Kyle. What’s up?” Bruce asks.

“Just gonna check out for a while. Maybe grab a cup of coffee.”

“Aw, man. Didn’t the doctor talk to you this morning?”

“Uh, no. About what?” Shit. This is not good. The other times Booth talked to me outside of our regular appointments, he told me I wasn’t meeting expectations. And then he told me that Joey was dead.

“Your off-site privileges. He revoked ’em yesterday.” Bruce isn’t ruffled at all by this conversation. He’s probably told a hundred patients the same thing.

I, however, am very fucking ruffled. I clench my fists to stop myself from picking up the clipboard on the desk. I want to throw it at his head. Maybe take it to Booth’s office and hit him in the face with it a couple of times. “Why? Is it because I slept so much this week? I’m better now. I promise.” Why am I pleading my case here? Booth is the only one who can do anything to change it.

“’Cause you were late yesterday.”

“That’s bogus! Check the sign-in sheet.”

“You might as well calm down. I can’t do anything about it. You’ll have to talk to the doctor, and he’s not here until tomorrow.”

I go back up to my room and lie in bed, fighting the urge to look out the window. Maybe I should pull out one of Eddie’s tricks and lose my shit, get pumped so full of sedatives I miss my appointment tomorrow.

There’s no way I can sit in a room alone with Booth. I’ll punch him in the nose.
